The Shapes of Things
I try not to reduce the people I love down to their looks. I often think of a line from a rupi kaur poem where she says “i want to apologize to all the women i have called pretty/before i called them intelligent or brave”
After all, my friends are more than that. They’re thoughtful, independent, and crazy intelligent women and men that I am grateful to have in my life.
This morning I got on the subject of body image with a group of friends in this ridiculous chat that takes up too much of my time. We were specifically talking about rope, which is a very body conscious kink. One friend expressed her reluctance to ask certain people to play because she mainly saw them play with “thin, beautiful women”.
My initial instinct was to correct as I do when anyone I care about berates themselves, to tell her that she was beautiful and lovely (which she is). But I related instead.
When I think about women discussing their bodies, I often think about that scene in Mean Girls where “the plastics” stand in front of the mirror and point out absurd flaws (“my nail beds are disgusting”) and look at Cady expectantly, waiting for her to chime in.
Discussing body image can be unhealthy that way, but it can also be incredibly empowering. Especially if you respond with compassion rather than attempting to echo someone’s insecurities.
I love rope. Rope by itself relaxes me, and when combined with fear and pain it capitalizes on all of my kinks. But I too, feel overhwhelmed when the majority of popular rope pictures feature impossibly beautiful, thin models.
The scene as a whole mirrors what is popular in mass media because we are not exempt from typical beauty standards. That’s just the fact. This doesn’t mean that heavier bottoms, or bottoms with disabilities, or older bottoms don’t have a place - but it can sure feel like that.
But what is the solution? I told my friend that I understood. Because I had a lot of these feels too, but I remind myself that there’s more than one way to be beautiful. That there’s more than one way to tie.
We all sort of bounced off each other, sharing our experiences with body image. Rather than feeding off negative energy, we had a theraputic experience in that we were all able to praise each other while simultaneously relating to one another.
One person brought up a great point, about how when you step away from just the ornamental images and look at these amazing ties that distort your body into all these pecuiliar shapes.
This really resonated with me.
I mean isn’t that what our bodies are? A bunch of peculiar shapes pushed together to do this one thing. And while the end results look different, they all have the same function: to feel, to love, to experience, and to learn. And you know what? The simplicity of that alone is beautiful.
This is important stuff, RBG! This is helpful for me both in my own self image struggles (I have such a mix of feelings) and as a reminder of why representation in the imagery that we see is important. :3
